Question 1

How much do franchise owners actually make?

Accepted Answer

The often-quoted average is about $102,910 (Franchise Business Review), but the distribution matters more than the average: roughly 41% of food-franchise owners earn under $50,000 a year while only about 15% earn over $250,000. A franchise buys a probability distribution, not a fixed income.

Question 2

Where can a franchisor legally tell you what you will earn?

Accepted Answer

Only in Item 19 (the Financial Performance Representations section) of the FDD. Any earnings number stated outside Item 19 is a violation of the FTC Franchise Rule and is itself a red flag. Only about 25% of franchisors include an Item 19 at all.

Question 3

Is there a real franchise failure rate?

Accepted Answer

The '80% succeed' claim is survivorship-biased. A more honest signal is the SBA loan default rate — roughly 9.9% for franchise loans (2010–2021) vs 7.5% across all SBA loans — and it varies wildly by brand. Ask for the SBA default rate of the specific brand.
